S&P 500 TRACKER
Most Surprising Trends in the S&P 500 This Week
1. The S&P 500 closed at a record high for the 37th time in 2024 on Monday, topping the 5,600 level for the first time. This marks an unprecedented number of new highs in a single year, far exceeding historical averages.
2. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is lagging behind the S&P 500 about 13%. This level of underperformance compared to the S&P 500 is highly unusual, as the Dow often underperforms during bull markets but not to this extent.
3. The S&P 500 has booked a 15% return in the first half of 2024, which is among the top-7 best starts to a year in the last 35 years. Historically, strong first-half performances have not typically indicated that the market has "burned all its gas" - in the 11 years where the S&P 500 was up 10% or more at the end of June, the average full-year return went on to be 29%. Stocks historically perform better when the Fed pauses than when the cuts start.
